Tel Aviv – Jaffa on Bicycles

Policy of the Municipality of Tel Aviv–Jaffa

For over a decade, the Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality has been supporting the use of bicycles as a means of transportation in the city - on the way to work, studies, shopping, leisure activities and entertainment. The decision to encourage use of bikes in the city is part of the municipality's overall transportation policy that emphasizes efficient, multi-format and environmentally friendly transportation.

Why bicycles?

Bicycles are a convenient, efficient, non-polluting, inexpensive, quiet and friendly means of transportation that encourages independence and equality.
Tel Aviv-Jaffa's flat topography and comfortable climate nearly all year round is particularly suitable for bicycling. Riding a bike, you can reach any location by taking the shortest route, without traffic jams and parking tickets. For example, from Ganei Yohoshua you can reach Rabin Square in 7 minutes. From the Hatikva Market to Rothschild Boulevard and Magen Daviv Square takes about 11 minutes, and you can reach the port from Dizengoff Center in 12 minutes.

Bicycling is a great contribution to environmental quality – it reduces the levels of air pollution and noise in the city. Riding a bike is healthy: regular pedaling improves your physical fitness, helps prevent heart disease and contributes to a sense of well-being.

Bicycle Facts & Figures
To date, about 100 kilometers of bicycles paths and routes have been constructed in Tel Aviv-Jaffa
12% of the residents of the city's center reach work on a bicycle
From 2011, bike rentals will be available throughout the city, in 150 distribution points that will be installed over a period of 3 years.

Bicycle Parking

The Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality has installed more than two thousand parking stands for bicycles throughout the city. The stands are installed next to centers of activity, such as public buildings (schools and community centers), commercial centers, public transport stations, gardens and parks.
The stands enable bikers to lock the bicycle chassis to the stand, which reduces the risk of theft. It is advisable to use a strong anti-theft lock that keeps the bicycle chassis and front wheel locked to the parking stand. We also recommend another lock for the back wheel (harder to break, and therefore to steal).

Tour routes throughout the city

In honor of Tel Aviv-Jaffa's 100 year anniversary, Tel Aviv created three tour routes that tell the city's story in three colors that are typical of Tel Aviv. The routes present sites, historical events and the social and cultural heritage of the city. Note that in some of the routes there is not special arrangement for bicycles, and bikers must ride on the road.
