There’s a reason Tel Aviv is called the White City: In 2003, UNESCO declared Tel Aviv a World Cultural Heritage site due to its wealth of Bauhaus architectural structures, which are characterized by their functionality and simplicity.
German Jewish architects who immigrated to Palestine in the 1930s designed and constructed around 4,000 Bauhaus, or International Style, buildings across the city, many in the heart. Sadly, some of the original structures have been severely neglected or even demolished, but the municipality has in recent years made special efforts to preserve the remaining sites, at least 1,500 of which are slated for conservation.
